Meals From the Heart

When a child is receiving medical treatment for serious illness or injury, taking away the worry of "what's for dinner?" can be a wonderful relief. This is why one our favorite ways to help out at the Ronald McDonald House of Charlottesville (RMHC) is by volunteering for their "Meals from the Heart" program. 


Red Shoe Cville volunteers provide a meal for RMHC residents on the third Monday of each month. If you're interested in helping out check out our Sign Up Page here or contact our Volunteer Coordinator Carl Schwarz, at caschwarz83@gmail.com or 417-540-1791.  

If our regular dinner rotation doesn't work for you there are many other opportunities to give families - many of whom are through the hardest days of their lives - a little piece of mind the rest of the month. The goal at RMHC  is to have at least one prepared meal each day – breakfast, lunch, dinner, even brunch - so there are lots of chances to make someone's day a little better.  Some volunteers even come in just to bake cookies - and trust us, after a long day at the hospital, fresh baked cookies are a welcome sight and smell!

And don't fret if you're new to the process - the RMHC website provides everything you need to know about providing a meal. Plus, Carl is such a great guy that he'll even come to the house on your first evening to give you a brief orientation and make sure you're comfortable with everything.  Bon appetit!
 

Brew Ha Ha

Imagine a day filled with tasting incredible chili from amazing local cooks and restaurants accompanied by beer from Charlottesville's best local breweries...Well, that is exactly what we have in store for you on April 18!

In addition to our annual Chili Cook-Off this year, Red Shoe Cville will be hosting Cville's first ever blind beer battle - the Downtown Chili Showdown Brew Ha Ha! We're going to take away the logos from your favorite beers and let YOU decide - purely on taste - who brews your favorite beers!! Added bonus...it's for the kids and families of Ronald McDonald House of Charlottesville!

Categories will include IPA, Wheat, Malty/Brown/Stout, Lager and a Brewer's Choice. Tasting flights can be purchased for $5, entitling purchaser to vote for one beer per flight.  Additionally, each brewery will have a beer of their choice available for purchase at their booth for $5.

Participating breweries include: Three Notch'd Brewing Company , South Street Brewery, Blue Mountain Brewery, Devils Backbone Brewing Company, and Wild Wolf Brewing Company.

Get your tastebuds ready because on April 18, 2015 home cooks, restaurants and businesses from around Charlottesville will be donning their chefs hats for the 2015 Downtown Chili Showdown!  This year's competition is going to be bigger and better than ever with even more competitors, great entertainment, and - new for 2015 - the First Annual Downtown Chili Showdown Brew Ha Ha blind beer battle!

Red October

Since our inception in January of 2012 Red Shoe Cville has made it our goal to always have fun while working toward our goal of raising money for the Ronald McDonald House of Charlottesville (RMHC).  Whether we're concocting a new recipe at our annual Chili Cook-Off, sharing an old recipe with RMHC residents at our Monday night Guest Chef gigs, or knocking a few items off the 'ol To-Do List during our Saturday Work Parties, there's one thing you can always rest assured we will be doing and that is HAVING FUN.   You can trust us when we say that what we have in store for this you October will be no exception.  (Hint: it involves beer.  Really good beer).

Here's the scoop:

Throughout the month of October we will be teaming up with our friends at Three Notch'd Brewing Company to host our first annual "Red October" celebration.  During the entire month the generous people at Three Notch'd will be donating $1 for each pint of a specially designated beer to Red Shoe. Yes, you read that right. You order a delicious Three Notch'd beer and we get a dollar.  Pretty much the best fundraiser ever, right?  

But wait - it gets even better!  To make things even more fun Three Notch'd will be tapping a new "Red October" beer every Tuesday in October and on that day they will double their donation.  Beer for you, $2 for Red Shoe and a great time for everyone at one of the coolest places in town to hang out.  Told you we knew how to have fun!

Red October kicks off on Tuesday, October 7 at Three Notch'd Brewing Company at 5:30pm.  The gang at Three Notch'd will be pouring the newly tapped Pumpkin Ale - our friends from Papa John's will be serving up some hot delicious pizza (try the Red Shoe Special!) - music will be playing...and we just may have some of those highly sought after Red Shoe Beer Mugs for sale.

No time to make dinner tonight?  Here's an idea...

Papa John's of Charlottesville has generously offered to team up with us to help us support our mission of raising money for the Ronald McDonald House of Charlottesville.  In addition to providing monthly meals at the House Papa John's now offers a "Red Shoe Pizza Special" in which $1 of each purchase of a large 3-topping or specialty pizza is donated to Red Shoe!  Simply call in or place your order on-line for the Red Shoe Special and $1 of the purchase price automatically goes to us. It's that simple - not to mention that everyone at the dinner table is happy, too!

Putt-Putt Power

Dust off your putter and RED shoes and come join us for a great time!  The Professional Putters Association will hold is Hall of Fame Classic Tournament at our very own Putt-Putt on Rio Road. 
Now we did not even realize that there was a PROFESSIONAL Putt Putt Association but we are beyond excited to catch the action live.  We even have a really neat opportunity for you to play with the pros to show off your skills and maybe even win a prize or two. 

As a part of the festivities the PPA (Professional Putters Association) is hosting a Pro-Am Event this Thursday evening, July 31st, as a fundraiser for the House.  To make this a success all we need is YOU to come play with us!  Yes it really is that simple.  We know its last minute but when else do you get to act like a kid to help the children of the Ronald McDonald House Charity of  Charlottesville.  We have placed a link to the registration page below and all the major details that you will need.  If you run into any other questions please just drop us an email at redshoecville@gmail.com and we will be more than happy to help. 

Happy Gilmore was known for screaming at his ball to just GO HOME and by coming and playing some putt putt with us you can help the families staying at the House have a home away from home till they can, just like the ball, finally get back to theirs.

Grand Re-Opening

Earlier this spring we were fortunate to be invited to celebrate with RMHC staff and residents for a Grand Re-Opening pizza party at the house, courtesy of our friends Papa John's of Cville.  We were all blown away by how beautiful the house renovations turned out and agreed that we couldn't wait for our next opportunity to make dinner for the residents just so we could use that amazing kitchen.  (Check out photos on our Facebook page). 

And speaking of dinner...you may have heard that our local Charlottesville Papa John's has a pretty awesome special going on right now called the "Red Shoe Special".  Order any large 3 topping or specialty pizza and Papa John's donates $1 to us!  Dinner and a donation just by placing an order?  That's our kind of meal and our kind of deal!   Thank you, Vic and entire Papa John's team, for rockin' your red shoes with us!
